Following the BCP Cabinet meeting on 30th September 2019, the A338-Wessex Fields scheme is due to be considerably scaled back. Granted planning permission by the former Bournemouth Borough Council in January this year despite considerable public opposition, the application will now be subject to a number of changes. The new Unity Alliance administration has decided only to go ahead with Phase 1.1 of the scheme, allowing Wessex Water access to the A338 and taking the road up to the site at Riverside Avenue. There will then be a new public consultation as to the future use of the land. The planned roads flyover has been shelved.
The BCP Cabinet wish to see some development on the Riverside Avenue site, but only alongside major sustainable transport initiatives. These changes represent a significant victory for local people in the Strouden and Muscliff ward, many of whom campaigned against a scheme that they believe would clearly add to congestion on an already struggling local roads network.
