Police and Watch Members Support Neighbourhood Watch Week

Dorset Police and watch members are supporting national Neighbourhood and Home Watch Week 2013 - with a series of public events taking place around the county.

National Neighbourhood and Home Watch Week takes place between 15 and 23 June 2013.

A number of events have been organised by neighbourhood and home watch groups in Dorset for communities to take part in fun activities - while also getting to know their local watch group members and find out more about becoming involved in schemes.

This year also marks the thirtieth anniversary of Home and Neighbourhood Watch in Dorset, with the first scheme set up in the Moordown area of Bournemouth in 1983.

There are now neighbourhood and watch schemes running throughout Dorset, covering neighbourhood areas, business premises and rural areas through specialist watch groups like Horse Watch and Farm Watch.

John Shave MBE, Chair of the Association of Dorset Watches, said: "Watch Schemes encourage residents to work together to reduce crime and the fear of crime, helping to build stronger communities.

"We are proud to support National Neighbourhood and Home Watch Week and I'd encourage people to get along to these fantastic events to find out more."

Police and Crime Commissioner Martyn Underhill said: "Neighbourhood Watch and Home Watch are fantastic ways for the community to bond together, helping to keep Dorset safe. I am humbled by how some of the Dorset Watches integrate communities and involve the public with policing. Please take this opportunity to look at how your community can become part of this fantastic joint venture."

Motorists are being advised by Dorset Police to remove all valuables from their vehicles when visiting beauty spots in the County.

Typically, thefts from motor vehicles increase during the summer months but many people still take risks when leaving their vehicles unattended by leaving windows open or valuables on display. The best advice is not to leave anything in your car, leave it at home or take it with you.

During the afternoon of Monday, 17th September four attempted distraction burglaries occurred in the Northbourne and Redhill areas of Bournemouth. On all four occasions a male called at properties claiming to work for the local council and he advised residents he was investigating a problem with blocked drains in their area. This was not true.

The male is described as white, 5'8"-5'10, slim build aged mid 20's to early 30's with short possibly fair hair. He is believed to have been wearing blue jeans, t-shirt and a waistcoat.

This is one of many fictitious reasons fraudsters use in their attempts to gain entry into unsuspecting victims homes. If you are in doubt of a caller's legitimacy, please call a friend or neighbour to assist you in verifying it. Please pass this information on to your neighbours. Thank You.

Trading Standards have received notification today that residents are receiving 'unsolicited' telephone calls from a 'security' company asking them to agree to a visit by 2 people to give them safety and security advice in their homes. The company say they are in the Bournemouth/Poole area and would like to demonstrate their services. They suggested that if a resident agreed to a demonstration his/her 'security system alarm' would be given priority service through the Emergency Services. The caller did not give out the company name or any contact details.

The company 'withheld' their telephone number. One resident asked the caller for a telephone number and said they would fetch some paper to write it down. By the time they picked up the receiver again the call had been ended.

Advice to residents: Do not engage in conversation with unsolicited (uninvited) telephone callers. The safest thing to do is simply to state: "I do not take calls from companies and I am going to put down the phone" and do so straight away. This is not impolite. The caller is intruding into your home, and you have no obligation to talk to them. The more you listen, the more you may get drawn into conversation.

Keep safe and vigilant. Do not let strangers into your home - either by means of the telephone, or on the doorstep.

If residents receive suspicious sales calls they can call Citizens Advice consumer service for advice on Tel: 08454 040506.

To find a trader you can trust Trading Standards advise consumers to choose a trader who is a member of the Buy With Confidence Approved Trader Scheme. All traders have been checked out and are CRB checked. They do not 'cold call'.

Details can be found on the website www.buywithconfidence.gov.uk or by calling Tel: 08454 040506.

Dorset Police would like to remind residents not to allow strangers into their home, regardless of what they are told on their doorstep.

Recently an elderly occupant became victim of a distraction burglary having allowed a stranger in to her home. The male claimed his car had broken down and asked to use her phone book to call for assistance. It was subsequently discovered he had stolen cash and bankcards.

Please pass this information on. Thank you.

National Identity Fraud Prevention Week Scam Busters update

National Identity Fraud Prevention Week started on Monday, 17th October 2011, to alert consumers and businesses to the threat of identity fraud at home and at work.

According to research commissioned by Fellowes exclusively for the campaign, although 95% of the UK population are now aware of the threat and risks of identity fraud, the number of victims is still rising as people continue to be careless with their identities.

A total of 7% of the UK population have been victims of identity fraud, equating to over 4 million people. The average cost of these incidents to each victim is £1,190.

When it comes to identity fraud, prevention is always key. Some easy ways for individuals to protect themselves include:

  • Always checking for unfamiliar transactions on bank statements
  • Shredding all documents containing sensitive information using a cross cut shredder before throwing them away
  • Looking into mail that goes missing
  • Carrying out regular personal credit report checks
  • Redirecting post for at least six months when moving house
  • Limiting the amount of information shared when using social networking sites

For more tips and advice on how to prevent identity fraud, visit the campaign's website, www.stop-idfraud.co.uk. The website contains a downloadable advice pack for consumers as well as a business guide.

This is a good news story from Muscliff and Throop Safer Neighbourhood Team. On Sunday, 9th October 2011 at 9am five young people from the Muscliff and Throop area worked local police and other agencies to rebuild a damaged wall. The wall belonged to an elderly resident who was a repeat victim of criminal damage over the summer. Local police organised funding from the local councillors to pay for materials for the community day of action. The day was a real success and one of the young people has been offered a job. This project is a good example of partnership working in the community. POLICE SEARCH FOR MISSING WEYMOUTH MAN

Police in Weymouth are becoming increasingly concerned for a vulnerable missing 55-year-old man.

Nicholas Stephen Crocker from Weymouth, was reported missing just after 9am on Wednesday, 21 September 2011, and was last seen at 6.30am that morning.

Nicholas is white, between five feet seven inches and five feet eight inches tall and of a stocky build. He has receding white or grey hair, white stubble, a tattoo of antlers on the back of one hand and on one forearm.

When he was last seen, he was wearing green camouflage trousers and T-Shirt, a navy blue fleece and black boots.

Superintendent Mike Rogers said: "We are very concerned for Nicholas' safety as this behaviour is completely out of character.

"Nicholas is a licensed firearms holder and our enquiries suggest that a pistol is outstanding. It is possible that Nicholas is in possession of this firearm, which he is licensed to own.

"While there is absolutely no suggestion of any risk to members of the public, we would still ask that Nicholas is not approached. Any sightings of a man fitting his description should be reported to Dorset Police urgently.

"It is essential that we find Nicholas so that we can make sure that he is safe and well - anyone with information regarding his whereabouts should call us as soon as possible."

Anyone with any information or knowledge as to Nicholas' whereabouts should call Dorset Police on 101, quoting incident number 21:98.

101 NON-EMERGENCY NUMBER GOES LIVE IN DORSET

The new 101 police non-emergency telephone number has gone live today, Monday, 19 September 2011.

Members of the public in Dorset must now ring 101 to contact Dorset Police for non-urgent enquiries.

The new 101 number has replaced the previous non-emergency police number in Dorset of 01202 or 01305 222 222.

This new non-emergency number has gone live across all of the police forces in the south west today – and the 101 number is due to be available in all police force areas of England and Wales by the end of January 2012.

Chief Superintendent Colin Searle, Communications and Contact Services Commander, said: "The new 101 police non-emergency telephone number is easy to remember and will be live across the whole country early next year.

"It is important that the public in Dorset know that they must dial 101 to contact the police in Dorset for non-urgent business from now on.

"The public should call 101 to report crime, to contact their local Safer Neighbourhood Team, to provide us with information about crimes that have been committed or to make a general enquiry.

"As ever, people should always dial 999 in an emergency - when life is in danger or a crime is in progress."

Calls to the 101 non-emergency number - from both landlines and mobile phones - cost 15 pence per call no matter what time of day you call, or how long you are on the phone.

A telephone scam is doing the rounds. Victims receive a telephone call from a person claiming to be a representative of BT. The caller claims they will dis-connect you because of an unpaid bill and ask you to make payment via credit card over the phone.

They realise that you may not believe them so offers to demonstrate that they are from BT by asking you to hang up and then try dialling someone and they will dis-connect you to prevent making that call.

During this process your phone will appear dead, no dialling or engaged tone - nothing until they phone you again.

HELP PROTECT VULNERABLE NEIGHBOURS FROM BURGLARS AND ROGUE TRADERS

Bournemouth and Poole residents are being encouraged to help protect their elderly and vulnerable neighbours from distraction burglars and rogue traders - as the 'Refer a Neighbour' scheme is re-launched.

Dorset Police and East Boro Housing Trust have teamed up under the scheme to fit free locks and door chains to homes of elderly and vulnerable people in the areas.

The organisations are encouraging concerned residents to call the dedicated Refer a Neighbour hotline number and leave their neighbours’ details on the 24-hour answer phone.

A local Safer Neighbourhood officer will then pay them a visit to provide advice on home security and how to deal with strangers who call at the door, as well as offering the option of having free locks and door chains fitted by East Boro Housing Trust’s Handy Van Security Service.

Detective Inspector Stewart Dipple, who is leading the scheme, said: "Unscrupulous people will try to gain access to the homes of the elderly and vulnerable - employing various distraction techniques ranging from offering to do gardening work, building work or stating they are from the water or gas board - in order to steal their belongings or con them out of money.

"We want to make the elderly and vulnerable members of our community safer and feel safer in their homes. A simple kindly phone call alerting us to a neighbour could prevent them becoming a victim of these vile criminals."

In 2007, when the Refer a Neighbour scheme was last run, more than 200 homes in Poole were fitted with free security devices.

A local resident has advised Dorset Police of a suspicious incident earlier today. The resident received a telephone call from a male purporting to be a Police Officer trying to sell advertising space in a Community Magazine. Advice from Trading Standards.

Beware of doorstep caller cons.

Bournemouth Trading Standards are warning residents to beware of doorstep callers exploiting the current bad weather as an opportunity to tout for unnecessary building work.

This warning comes as the Office of Fair Trading revealed an 18% rise in complaints about doorstep callers offering home repairs. More than a quarter relate to roofing.

A typical scenario involves telling the householder that they have a broken roof tile which can be repaired for a small fee. Often this work escalates to a claim that a new roof is needed at great cost, which is unnecessary.

Councillor David Smith, Cabinet Member for Community, said: "In the bad weather residents may be frightened into agreeing to have the work done for fear of the consequences.

"The majority of these doorstep callers do not provide householders with the required paperwork, and consumers often find there are problems with the work once the traders have left. They are then left with the bill to put the work right, as the traders become un-contactable.

"Genuine tradesmen do not normally need to call house to house."

Officers warn that these doorstep traders are very persuasive and do everything they can to get householders to agree to have the work done there and then. Trading Standards always advise residents not to deal with anyone who simply turns up at your door. When you have work that needs doing, shop around, ask friends and get quotes from several traders.

Please report any incidents concerning doorstep traders by calling 08454 040506.

July 2009

This is a message to all HomeWatch members regarding a new trend in distraction burglaries.

In the last few weeks several burglaries have occurred across the Leicestershire force area where householders have been targeted because they have a "For Sale" board outside their homes.

The offenders have knocked on the door and asked if they can view the home as they are thinking of buying in the area. Once they have been invited inside they then split up and steal cash and jewellery before leaving.

Some arrests have been made and this method has not yet been used in our area but Leicestershire Police would offer the following advice:-

1) Never invite unannounced people into your home for a viewing.

2) Only accept viewings arranged by your estate agent. You may wish to check with your insurance company regarding your cover should anything be stolen whilst persons are being accompanied by agents on a viewing.

3) Be a little suspicious - if you feel uneasy about someone calling at your home, don't let them in ,phone the police and tell give them as much detail as you can.

4) For further advice contact your local Safer Neighbourhood Team.

Please pass this advice onto as many people as possible. Thank you.
