This morning, my husband and I joined Richard Heskith a warden with the Parks Department and a band of walkers, some regulars, many new, single and in groups, behind Homebase at Castlepoint, for a 2 hour walk in Strouden Woods.
Quite a few people didn't know the woods are there and we set off in warm sunshine for the most enjoyable, entertaining and informative 2 hours - and all for just £2 (RSPB events and star watching are £3).
We were treated to well recited jokes (from the Two Ronnies) relevant poetry from Wordsworth and Shakespeare and one lady with a lovely voice was even moved to sing a song about Celandine that she remembered from school.
We looked out for Brimstone and Holly Blue butterflies, patches of Celandine and all the early signs of Spring. We stood and watched a Robin, Wren and Mistle Thrush singing out, saw two Herons and a Swan in flight, heard Green Woodpecker, Blackbirds, Blue Tits and Great Tits and saw Nuthatch, Magpie, Pigeons and Gulls among many others.
Richard's enthusiasm, expertise and easy manner were so well received and I now know which bird sounds like it is laughing (Green Woodpecker) and which sounds like a football supporter's rattle in flight (Mistle Thrush) and all in such a relaxed and friendly group.
Walks take place all over Bournemouth, with Stour Valley, Redhill Park, Strouden Woods and Littledown and Kings Park near to us, to Hengistbury Head, The Chines, Bournemouth Gardens, Turbary and Kinson Commons and many more.
If, like us, you have been meaning to investigate these walks, don't hesitate a moment longer.
